Making a Dent in Lent Yet?, 2/24/21

Dear STL Family,

This Lent, I was so determined to be more disciplined and to incorporate just two small practices in my daily routine. Yeah, you guessed it - I blew it in the first week! I've been told that I am a perfectionist and I laughingly respond, "Well, if you think I strive to be perfectly imperfect, then yes I am a perfectionist."

Over my lifespan, I've spent a lot of time in the desert of life and, at this point, I think I know what to do when I mess up - recall what Christ says about perfection, like in Matthew 5:48 "So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect." I know that only God is perfect, perfectly complete and that I am made in His image. I am really just called to be a reflection of the character of God. I believe that’s what it means to be created in the image of God. So as to whether I can achieve that perfection, it's really up to me. With that, I'll try again this week to reflect his image and strive to be more like HIm.

I recently had a chance to talk with a friend's grandchildren, one of whom commented on how boring the church looks during Lent and how short Mass is. He made good points and I think I did an adequate job of explaining why it is so. I then came across an article that I'd like to share with you here. Just click below to view:

I just want to reiterate a strong point of this article and that is, "An essential aspect of the life of the Christian is to worship God at Mass."

Here's our schedule for this 2nd week of Lent:
  • Friday, Feb. 26th @ 7 pm -- indoor, in-person Stations of the Cross devotion
  • Friday, Feb. 26th @ 7 pm -- virtual zoom Stations of the Cross devotion
  • Weekend Masses @ 5 pm, 9 am, & 11:30 am -- all indoors, in-person
Thank you and God bless you.

With a very grateful heart,

Jane A.
The three traditional practices or traditions to be taken up with renewed vigor during Lent are PRAYER (justice towards God), FASTING (justice towards self), and ALMSGIVING (justice towards neighbors). A commitment to these practices during Lent may aid us in our awareness of God and conversion of heart.
