Four Steps to Walk with One

Purpose

Every Catholic in the United States is invited to ‘Walk with One” person, establish a bond of friendship, build trust and rapport, share your faith journey, and invite the person to more.

  • Step One: Identify. Don’t just pick someone. Ask God whom He wants you to accompany on their journey home to the Church. He will point you to the person he has in mind and open doors for conversations that need to happen. Spend time in silence listening to the Holy Spirit. If possible, spend time in Eucharistic Adoration. When you put the Holy Spirit in control, He will prepare the person’s heart, provide opportunities, prompt you, give you the words, and ensure success as He defines it. You will be a conduit for the Holy Spirit to connect and work through.

  • Step Two: Intercede. As soon as the Lord lays someone on your heart, begin to pray for them! Ask God to remove whatever obstacles are making it difficult for this person to draw closer to Christ and his Church. Pray for grace to be able to accompany them well. Remember there is no time frame, no expectations, no pressure, just trust in the Holy Spirit’s ability to work through your willingness.

  • Step Three: Connect. Look for ways to connect with the person you’ve prayed for, to build a deeper relationship, and to practice the art of empathetic listening, without any agenda. Get together with them for coffee or lunch. Get to know your friend’s joys and struggles. Share with them some of your own. Follow the Holy Spirit’s prompts and remember He is responsible for success as He defines it, not you.

  • Step Four: Invite. Follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit to invite him or her to a concrete next step in fostering a relationship with Jesus and the church. This might mean joining you for a small group, parish event, or Mass on Sunday. We will be providing guidance and opportunities.

Anyone can do this. All you need is a loving heart, a listening ear, and trust in the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Let go of agenda, expectations, and time frames.
