Parish Ministries

Pastoral Ministries in the Catholic Church...

...refer to the various forms of service and care provided by both clergy and laypeople to meet the spiritual, emotional, and sometimes physical needs of the faithful. The term comes from the Latin word pastor, meaning “shepherd,” reflecting the Church’s mission to care for the flock entrusted to her by Christ.

The goal of pastoral ministries is to imitate Christ, the Good Shepherd, by guiding and nurturing individuals and communities in faith, love, and service. These ministries provide support during key moments in life—both joyful and difficult—and promote the well-being of the whole person in light of the Gospel.

Outreach Ministry

Outreach

Our calling & inspiration is from the Matthew 25 gospel message: "What you do to the least of my brethren you do to me". Our Mission is to serve our neighbors in need, within our parish, and our East County & San Diego County community with material & financial aid, encouragement & spiritual support. We do home visits to validate need and either provide direct financial support or refer individuals to resources to get the needed help.  Our Outreach Committee meets every 4th Tuesday of the month at 3:30 pm in the church office conference room. Guests or friends of Outreach are always welcome to our meetings. For more information, contact Mike Wasyliw, Outreach Chairperson, at  619-715-8801 or email:  mjwasyliw@gmail.com.

Book Club

Do you enjoy good books and even better conversation? Our parish book club meets once a month (virtually, during the last week of the month) and we’d love to have you join us. We mix up our reading list — some months secular, some months spiritual — so there’s always something new to explore. Each meeting ends with choosing the next book together. Whether you read every page or just want to connect with others, you’re warmly invited.

Contact Mary Jo Jo at mjrray@gmail.com  or 619‑719‑2624 for details.

Creation Care Ministry

The Creation Care Ministry is in response to the previous Holy Father, Pope Francis’s Encyclical Letter, Laudato Si’ on Care for our Common Home. Membership is open to parishioners and families interested in caring for persons and our environment and advancing community health and sustainability. There are no membership fees. Meetings are currently held online with the Creation Care for the Diocese of San Diego on the first Monday of each month at 7 pm; with plans for approximately 4-5 meetings and events for the year within the parish community. Events include Emergency Preparedness, parish rosary, and upcoming youth events. For more information, contact Teresa Dodd at tdoddbutera@gmail.com.

Crochet/Knitting Ministry

The Yarning Ministry brings together crocheters and knitters who collaborate and direct their creative skills toward supporting an organization(s) chosen by the Outreach Committee. The primary aim is to produce handmade items which will be donated to those in need. Participants will gather once or twice a month providing time for fellowship, skill sharing, and the exchange of crochet and knitting patterns and ideas. Members can learn from one another and grow in their craft. For more information, contact Linda Kiki for information at 619-793-6365 or kiki@cox.net.

Lay Pastoral Ministry

Our Lay Pastoral Ministry was established to keep in touch with all our parishioners on a regular basis by phone and/or visits when deemed beneficial. Our goal is to be better aware of the trials and needs of our parishioners and offer assistance to meet their needs. We hope in doing so we will also reach those shut in, alienated, fallen away, and disengaged and help reconnect them with love. For more information, contact Rich Warcholik at hello@thechurchofstluke.org.

Linen Ministry

Volunteers in the Linen Ministry are responsible for cleaning, ironing, and maintaining the sacred cloths used during Mass-Corporal, Purificator, and the finger towels. Members ensure these items are pristine and handled with high reverence. Linens are brought home, washed according to specific liturgical guidelines, carefully ironed (often with light starch) to create crisp, specific folds, and returned to the parish sacristy by the weekend. For more information, contact Carol Claybrook at 619-442-2296.

Marriage Support and Enrichment Ministry

Our Marriage and Enrichment Ministry supports marriage through providing workshops, and ensuring our parishioners are made aware of opportunities to enrich their marriages through workshops, presentations, programs, date nights, and retreats through-out the diocese in support of marriage. For marriages in trouble, we provide referrals and resources available to work through any difficulties. For more information, contact Rich Warcholik at 619-933-8468 or email: hello@thechurchofstluke.org or.

Ministry to Assisted Living and Retirement Centers

On Wednesday afternoons at 3:30 PM, team members go to La Vida Real to lead a Communion Service for Catholic residents of this community. On the second Wednesday of each month, Fr. Don celebrates Mass with the residents. Training is available for anyone interested in being part of this important ministry.

For more information, contact Carol Stone at 619-442-1697.

Visitation Ministry

The Visitation Ministry is multi-functional. We visit anyone who is lonely, home bound, unable to get to mass, recovering from a surgery or accident, or for any other reason would like to be visited by a member of our parish to stay connected with St Luke. We provide fellowship, bring books from our library, and at times provide rides to Mass, doctors appointments and grocery shop.

For more information, contact Rich Warcholik at 619-933-8468  or email:  hello@thechurchofstluke.org.

Walk with One

Every Catholic in the United States is invited to ‘Walk with One” person, establish a bond of friendship, build trust and rapport, share your faith journey, and invite the person to more. This is not a program. It is not a movement. It is our mission as a Catholic. Trust the Holy Spirit to guide you through four simple steps. You are a channel for God to work through. There are no rules. There is no right or wrong way to do this. There is no time frame. No pressure. Just honesty, respect, and trust in the Holy Spirit. You are not alone. We will guide you step by step, support you, walk with you, and be a resource for questions or anything else you need. Watch the bulletin and Flocknote or website for more information, or contact Rich Warcholik at 619-933-8468 or email: hello@thechurchofstluke.org.

Widow & Widowers Ministry

Our mission is to support, encourage and serve those who have lost a spouse so they don’t feel alone and isolated, and to provide opportunities for them to meet their spiritual, emotional and social needs. Our vision is to build a caring community where widows and widowers can connect, socialize, and, through peer-to-peer support, begin to heal and grow spiritually, find new interests and purpose in life, where shared experiences become a source of renewed hope and strength. We meet once a month. For more information, contact Mina Scannicchio at 619-318-1898 or minascanni@gmail.com

Young Family Church Ministry

Our Young Family Community is a welcoming group of families raising young children who want to build friendships, grow spiritually, and support one another through the joys and challenges of family life.  Families gather casually at least once a month for playground meet-ups, family hangouts, simple spiritual activities, and after-church courtyard playtime where both kids and parents can connect in community. This ministry is open to families with young children who are looking for fellowship, encouragement, and meaningful relationships within the church family.
