How do I....
Register myself or family in the parish?
Parish RegistrationThe Catholic Church maintains boundaries for parishes; however, people are allowed to be members of whatever parish they choose. Techinically, if you have not officially joined a parish, you are considered to be a member of the parish within whose boundaries you reside. It is hard for the pastor, or pastoral staff, to know each parishioner personally so it is helpful for you to register, in either case.
If you are registered, you will receive parish mailings and may choose to be notified of parish events by email (by signing up for flocknote). You may choose to receive donation envelopes and/or may support the parish through our automatic donation program.
Unrelated individuals in a household should register separately. Individuals or couples with children should register as a family. Once a child reaches the age of majority, they should register separately, even if still living at home wiith parents.
You may ask our Ushers for a registration form after Sunday Mass, complete it and drop it in the collection basket on the following Sunday. You may register at the parish office on Monday through Friday between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. You may also register online.
To complete the form electronically online, simply download the form from the button below and type directly onto the document. Save it and then the completed document may be emailed or printed and brought to the Parish Office. Please see the form for full submission details.
Upon submitting the form via email or in-person, you will receive an email from the Parish Office in 1-3 business days regarding your registration application. Please have patience with us as we may experience a large influx of applications.
If you have any questions or concerns when registering as a member of our parish, please contact Joanie Maitilasso via email, secretary@thechurchofstlukeec.org or phone at (619) 442-1697.
Request or stop an envelope?
All registered parishioners have the option to receive donation envelopes upon request. Donation envelopes are used to place donations of either cash or check into the collection basket during weekend masses.
To request or stop receiving donation envelopes by mail please contact the Parish Office at (619) 442-1697 during normal business hours.
Sign up for auto-pay or one-time donation on line?
Online GivingThe Church of St. Luke offers many ways in which you can give or support the parish financially such as automatic donation. Automatic donation is similar to "direct deposit" but retracts money from the account at the designated amount in which you have set. In other words, a specific dollar amount that you set will be deducted from your credit or checking account each month in support of the Parish.
In order to get started, click on the Online Giving button below (or on the main navaigation on the home page) in which you will be directed to our Online Giving Site. From the site you will find the St. Luke Sunday Collection, click on the image, scroll down and you will see the recurring donation or a one-time donation options.
In order to make a one-time donation, click "One Time Donation" in the right column; follow the prompts to make a one time donation to the Church.
In order to make a reoccurring donation, click "Recurring Donation" in the left column. From there, follow the prompts to set up an account and to select donation amounts each month.
If you have any questions or would like to learn more about Online Giving, please call the Parish Office at (619) 442-1697 during normal business hours.

Arrange to have my child baptized?
As you probably know, some other Christian traditions do not believe in infant baptism. The Catholic Church has always held that the faith is a free gift given by God to any who are open to receiving it. We believe that the gift of faith is given through the family. It is important, therefore, that you understand that, in presenting your child for baptism, you are accepting the responsibility of raising your child in the Catholic faith.
We do not baptize children unless there is reason to believe that the child will be brought up in the Catholic Church. (CIC 868 2) If the parents of the child are not living according to the faith; for example, if they are not part of a parish and do not attend Sunday Mass or are married outside the Church, then there is probably no founded reason to believe the child will be brought up in the faith.
Canon Law requires that the parents and sponsors be instructed on the meaning of the sacrament and the obligations attached to it. (CIC 851 2) Therefore, parents and sponsors are required to attend our training program or are required to provide certification that they have completed a program at another parish. Please consult the Parish Bulletin for numbers and whom to call to arrange for classes and set a date for the baptism. It is good for the parents and sponsors to attend the same classes if possible.
As a rule, an infant is to be baptized in the church of the parents unless just cause suggests otherwise. (CIC 857 2) In addition, the pastor of the child (the pastor of the church of the parents) has responsibility for the child. (CIC 519 & 530) If St. Luke is not your parish, you must obtain the permission of your pastor to have your child baptized here. Your pastor is the pastor of the parish whose geographic boundaries you live within or the pastor of the parish where you attend Mass on Sundays. It is normally expected that you be a registered member of the parish if you do not live within its geographic boundaries.
The role of the sponsor is important. Being a sponsor is more than just an honor. There are obligations involved. It is expected that the sponsor will help the child live a
Christian life and fulfill the obligations of baptism. (CIC 872) There is to be only one male sponsor or one female sponsor or one of each. Some cultures utilize additional
sponsors who are not considered official sponsors for the purposes of the Church. (CIC 873) The sponsor must be at least 16 years old, must be Catholic, must be fully initiated (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) and must be in good standing with the Church (participates at Mass on Sundays and if married is married in the Church, etc.) (CIC 874) Also, a sponsor may not be a parent of the one to be baptized. (CIC 874)
The Church’s sacraments are public and should be celebrated publicly. At St. Luke we normally celebrate group baptisms on the third Sunday of the month, after the 11:30 am Mass. Alternatively we may allow baptism at a regularly scheduled Sunday Mass for parishioners who regularly attend Mass here or for their grandchildren. We do not schedule private baptisms unless there is a serious pastoral reason.
We want to help you live the faith and raise your child in the faith. If you are serious about the faith but believe the parameters listed above may prohibit you from baptizing your child, talk to us anyway. We will do our best to help you resolve the difficulties.
Arrange or pre-plan a celebration of a funeral?
The Rite of Christian Burial for Catholics consists of a Vigil Service during the evening before, the Funeral Liturgy on the day of (usually a Mass) and the Graveside Service accompanying the burial itself. The Church allows cremation and teaches that the cremains should be treated with the same dignity as the body.
The Vigil Service usually occurs before or after a period that is set aside for relatives and friends to view the body of the deceased and pay respects to the immediate family. Many people, and some cultures, desire that a Rosary be said by those gathered for the deceased. The official rite is a Liturgy of the Word with Scripture reading and prayers. Speak to the deacon or priest who will be presiding at the vigil if you have special requests. The vigil is also a good time for people to publicly share remembrances about the deceased.
If holding a formal viewing and Vigil seems inappropriate for a specific reason, it may be appropriate to have the family gather in the presence of the body for a brief prayer service prior to the funeral Mass. Depending on availability, we will be happy to provide a priest or deacon to lead the service. In the case of cremation, particularly, this may help the family to emotionally take leave of their loved one.
The funeral Mass, at The Church of St. Luke, usually begins in the baptistery where we sprinkle the body or cremains with holy water to remind ourselves of the promise of eternal life given through Baptism. When the body of the deceased is present, we place the Funeral Pall over the casket as a reminder of the white garment we are given in Baptism. If cremains are present, the urn may be carried by one of the family members or they may be placed in our Ossuary which is carried by four pall bearers. A prayer book, rosary or other religious article used by the deceased may be carried in the procession and placed on the casket, or on a table up front in the case of cremains when the ossuary is not used.
The family is invited to choose the readings which will be used during the Liturgy of the Word and provide readers for the First and Second Readings, if there is one. If there will be no Deacon at the Mass, the family is invited to provide someone to assist with the Prayers of the Faithful also. For the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the family is invited to provide two or more individuals to bring up the gifts of bread and wine.
